Watson bent arthritically in front of each image in the gallery, unconsciously exclaiming his delight as he moved from canvas to canvas. Here, a man with a brush and paintbucket daubed the light from the street lamps overhead onto the wall in front of him. Across from it, an impossibly huge clipper ship sailed through the sea-blue sky, visible only in patches between the tops of the buildings. With the ease of long habit Watson took no notice of Holmes, who followed him with a determined grace that telegraphed both his distaste for modern art and his desire to humor his friend with his company.
At the image Nature victorious over mortal Art; taken from life in a wood near Perthshire, Holmes paused. He peered shortsightedly at the blotchy weathering on the base of the piano, and scribbled sums on his cuff to calculate growth rates of Scottish oaks and the dimensions of popular models of upright pianos from the middle of the last century. Finally he looked over at Watson, who had moved on to an image of a woman listening to a phonograph, which blew dragonflies in her face.
“I believe I’ve finally determined the fate of that Scottish farmer who went missing in 1834. Would you care to take a trip up to Perthshire to recover the body?”
