Watson lay back on the blanket, gazing at the rusty clouds that just barely reflected the last rays of the setting sun. A soft dusk filled the air, dulling the wine in his glass from red to purple. He considered lighting the lantern they had brought with them, but Mary had fallen asleep, her hair spread out over the grass, her feet in his lap. Without moving more than necessary, he started to pack the remains of their picnic back into the hamper. The fish remained just out of reach. Later, he thought, and stretched out next to his wife.
