Watson felt trapped. His life was nothing more than an inescapable urgency to dispatch whatever scoundrel would next be filling his days, felling victims, adding more paper to Holmes’s filing system, imagining he could handle the task of fooling Scotland Yard, fueling his dark ambitions before failing the moment Holmes got around to foiling whatever he had planned—and all in vain, for the criminal underworld never stopped foaling new offspring. He did not believe this feeling could worsen, but then Holmes entered, furling his umbrella.

“No end in sight to this rain,” Holmes announced. “The barometer is still falling.”
