Lestrade was not pleased about the paint. He earned too little to waive off the price of a new suit, and his superiors would certainly not be happy about the vehicle. Yes, Nichols was finally in custody, but surely the collateral damage hadn’t been necessary. He said so, but the response was not enlightening. He turned to Watson for elaboration.

“What does he mean, tradition? Does he often fling paint at people?”

“Oddly enough, he is not referring to himself. He means Nichols should not have walked under that ladder.”

“You mean, because Holmes was at the top, waiting.”

“Exactly.”
